Wrist

The wrist is the region connecting the forearm to the hand, centered on the joint between the radius and the carpal bones. It allows the hand to bend, extend, and move side to side.

Carpal bones: The eight small bones arranged in two rows between the forearm and the metacarpal bones. They form the wrist’s central bony framework and articulate with the radius.
Wrist flexion: Movement that bends the palm toward the inner forearm. Flexion is one of the wrist’s main movements and combines motion across several joints.
Wrist sprain: An injury in which wrist ligaments are stretched or torn, usually after a fall or sudden force. Sprains damage the structures that stabilize the wrist’s small bones.
Elbow: The joint region connecting the upper arm to the forearm, chiefly allowing bending and straightening. The elbow lies proximal to the wrist and governs a different set of arm movements.
Radius: The forearm bone on the thumb side, extending from the elbow to the wrist. It bears most of the direct articulation with the carpal bones.
Wrist extension: Movement that bends the back of the hand toward the outer forearm. Extension works with flexion to position the hand for grasping and pushing.
Distal radius fracture: A break in the radius near the wrist, often caused by falling onto an outstretched hand. This common fracture can disrupt the wrist’s joint surface and alignment.
Hand: The terminal part of the upper limb, containing the palm, fingers, and thumb. The wrist connects the forearm to this larger functional region.
Ulna: The forearm bone on the little-finger side, extending from the elbow to the wrist. A fibrocartilaginous disc separates it from the carpal bones.
Radial deviation: Movement of the hand toward the thumb side of the forearm. The wrist produces this side-to-side movement through coordinated carpal motion.
