Writing instrument

A tool used to make marks that form writing, typically by depositing ink, graphite, or another marking substance on a surface.

Ink: A fluid or paste containing pigments or dyes used to produce marks. Ink supplies the color carried by many writing instruments.
Fountain pen: A refillable pen that feeds liquid ink from an internal reservoir to a nib. Its reservoir and feed regulate ink flow to the writing tip.
Quill: A pen made from a bird feather, traditionally cut to form an ink-holding nib. Quills were widely used for handwriting before mass-produced metal pens.
Stylus writing in Mesopotamia: The use of reed tools to impress cuneiform signs into clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia. A pointed reed stylus was among the earliest tools for recording written signs.

Reed pen: A pen cut from a reed, used to apply ink to writing surfaces. Reed pens served ancient scribes and suited papyrus and other early surfaces.
Computer keyboard: An input device that sends typed characters to a computer or other electronic system. It produces digital text without directly marking a physical surface.
