x86-64

x86-64 is a 64-bit extension of the x86 instruction set architecture, also known as AMD64 or Intel 64. It adds 64-bit registers and addressing while retaining support for 32-bit and 16-bit x86 code.

Long mode: The x86-64 processor mode that enables 64-bit execution and retains a compatibility mode for older x86 software. It defines the processor environment in which x86-64 code executes.
x86: A family of instruction set architectures originating with Intel's 8086 processor. x86-64 extends this architecture while preserving substantial compatibility.
AMD: A semiconductor company that designed the original 64-bit extension of the x86 architecture. AMD introduced the architecture before Intel adopted a compatible implementation.
x86-64 ABI: The application binary interface specifying low-level conventions for x86-64 software on a particular platform. Platform-specific ABIs make compiled x86-64 programs interoperate with operating systems and libraries.
ARM architecture: A family of processor architectures known for fixed-width instruction encodings and broad use in mobile and embedded systems. ARM provides a major alternative to x86-64 in personal computers, servers, and mobile devices.
x86-64 registers: The general-purpose and special-purpose registers available to x86-64 software. Wider registers and added general-purpose registers distinguish x86-64 from earlier x86.
IA-32: The 32-bit generation of the x86 architecture, commonly associated with the Intel 80386 and later processors. Its 32-bit registers and address model provide the baseline x86-64 expands.
AMD K8: AMD's processor microarchitecture that first implemented the company's x86-64 architecture in commercial processors. K8 brought the extension to market in the Opteron and Athlon 64.
System V AMD64 ABI: The x86-64 application binary interface used by many Unix-like systems. It specifies the calling convention commonly used by Linux and other Unix-like platforms.
AArch64: The 64-bit execution state of the Arm architecture, introduced with Armv8-A. AArch64 offers a clean 64-bit design rather than extending the older x86 instruction set.
