Xenon trioxide

Xenon trioxide (XeO₃) is an unstable, explosive xenon compound in which xenon has oxidation state +6. It is a colorless crystalline solid that can detonate when dry or heated.

Molecular geometry: The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule. XeO₃ has a trigonal-pyramidal shape because xenon carries a lone pair.
Xenon trioxide synthesis: The preparation of XeO₃ by hydrolysis of xenon hexafluoride under controlled conditions. This route produces the compound while requiring careful control of its hazardous intermediates.
Xenon dioxide: A xenon oxide with formula XeO₂ and xenon in the +4 oxidation state. It is a lower oxide with a different xenon oxidation state and structure.
Neil Bartlett: A British chemist who prepared the first reported noble-gas compound in 1962. His discovery of xenon chemistry prompted the search for compounds such as XeO₃.
