Xenophanes

Xenophanes was a Greek poet and philosopher from Colophon, active in the sixth and early fifth centuries BCE. His surviving fragments criticize human-shaped gods and examine the limits of human knowledge.

Greek religion: The religious practices, stories, and institutions of ancient Greek communities, centered on many gods and local cults. His objections target the humanlike gods prominent in Greek religious poetry and worship.
Anthropomorphism: The attribution of human form, motives, or traits to nonhuman beings or forces. He exposes how people project their own appearance and customs onto gods.
Homer: The traditional name for the ancient Greek poet credited with the Iliad and the Odyssey. Xenophanes reproached Homer for portraying gods with human faults.
Xenophanes’ critique of anthropomorphic gods: A poetic argument that human communities imagine gods in their own image and customs. This is the clearest surviving expression of his attack on conventional divine portraits.
Greek epic poetry: Long narrative poetry in ancient Greek, especially the works associated with Homer and Hesiod. He challenged the authority of epic poets whose stories depicted gods behaving like humans.
Conjectural knowledge: Knowledge based on inference or opinion rather than direct certainty or demonstrated truth. His fragments distinguish human belief and investigation from secure knowledge of the gods.
Hesiod: An ancient Greek poet whose Theogony narrates the origins and genealogy of the gods. He grouped Hesiod with Homer as a source of misleading stories about divine conduct.
Xenophanes’ skepticism about knowledge: A fragmentary account distinguishing what people believe from what is certainly known about reality. His claim that even a true statement may not be recognized as knowledge sharpens his critique.
Colophon: An ancient Greek city in Ionia, on the western coast of Asia Minor. It was Xenophanes’ birthplace, before his reported life of travel and performance.
Divine revelation: Knowledge or communication understood as disclosed by a god or other supernatural source. His account of human inquiry offers no simple guarantee of revealed certainty.
