Xhosa Wars

The Xhosa Wars were a series of conflicts between Xhosa polities and European settlers and colonial forces on South Africa’s eastern frontier from 1779 to 1879.

Great Fish River: A major river in South Africa’s Eastern Cape that flows eastward to the Indian Ocean. Colonial authorities repeatedly treated it as a frontier boundary, though control remained contested.
Xhosa people: A Nguni-speaking people of southern Africa whose communities include distinct kingdoms and chiefdoms. Xhosa polities were the principal African parties to the conflicts.
Hintsa kaKhawuta: A paramount chief of the Gcaleka Xhosa who was killed by British forces in 1835. His capture and death during the Sixth Frontier War became a lasting symbol of colonial violence.
British Kaffraria: A British-administered territory established in Xhosa lands east of the Cape Colony in the nineteenth century. Its creation formalized colonial control over territory taken during the frontier wars.
Anglo-Zulu War: The 1879 war between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom in southern Africa. It occurred in the same year as the Ninth Frontier War but involved a different kingdom and theater.
Xhosa cattle killing movement: A millenarian movement in 1856–57 in which many Xhosa killed cattle and destroyed crops after prophecies of renewal. Its aftermath weakened Xhosa communities and reshaped the frontier without being a conventional colonial campaign.
Nguni peoples: A group of Bantu-speaking peoples of southern Africa, including the Xhosa, Zulu, and Swazi. Xhosa language and political traditions developed within the wider Nguni cultural world.
Sandile kaNgqika: A Rharhabe Xhosa chief who led resistance during several nineteenth-century frontier wars. His leadership connected the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Frontier Wars.
Ciskei: A former homeland in South Africa designated for Xhosa-speaking people under apartheid. Its later borders reflect a history of colonial territorial partition in the eastern Cape.
Basuto Wars: Nineteenth-century conflicts between the Basotho kingdom and colonial or settler forces in southern Africa. They were parallel frontier struggles, centered on Basotho sovereignty rather than Xhosa polities.
