Knowra Xia dynasty Xia dynasty The Xia dynasty is a traditionally dated early Chinese dynasty said to have preceded the Shang. Its existence as a historical ruling dynasty remains debated because direct contemporary evidence is lacking.
Erlitou culture : A Bronze Age archaeological culture centered in the Yiluo basin, conventionally dated to roughly 1900–1500 BCE. Its dates and location make it the leading archaeological candidate for the Xia, though no identification is settled.
Yu the Great : A legendary ruler credited in Chinese tradition with controlling floods and founding the Xia dynasty. He stands at the dynasty’s origin in accounts that link political legitimacy to flood control.
Shang dynasty : A Bronze Age Chinese dynasty attested by archaeological remains and contemporary oracle-bone inscriptions. The Shang has direct contemporary evidence that the Xia currently lacks.
Archaeology of China : The study of China’s past through material remains, including settlements, objects, burials, and environmental evidence. Its findings constrain claims about Xia society without automatically confirming the dynasty’s traditional name.
Longshan culture : A late Neolithic culture in northern China, known for walled settlements, polished black pottery, and regional variation. It provides an earlier archaeological backdrop for societies later associated with Xia origins.
Qi of Xia : The son of Yu the Great, traditionally described as the second ruler of the Xia dynasty. His succession is central to accounts of hereditary kingship replacing selection by merit.
Oracle bone script : The earliest known substantial Chinese writing, inscribed on bones and shells for divination during the late Shang. Its inscriptions document Shang rulers, providing an evidentiary benchmark for assessing Xia claims.
Radiocarbon dating : A method for estimating the age of once-living materials from their radioactive carbon-14 content. It helps date sites such as Erlitou, but cannot by itself establish that their inhabitants called their state Xia.
Taosi : A late Neolithic archaeological site in Shanxi, China, with large settlement remains and elite burials. Its substantial late third-millennium BCE society is sometimes considered in discussions of pre-Xia political development.
Jie of Xia : The last ruler of the Xia dynasty in traditional accounts, remembered as a tyrant overthrown by Tang of Shang. His defeat supplies the dynastic transition story through which later texts explain Xia’s fall.
