Xi'an Incident

A December 1936 political crisis in which Chinese generals detained Chiang Kai-shek and pressed him to suspend the civil war and resist Japanese expansion alongside the Communists.

Japanese invasion of Manchuria: Japan's 1931 occupation of Manchuria, which established the puppet state of Manchukuo. The occupation intensified demands that Chiang prioritize resistance to Japan over the civil war.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese Nationalist military and political leader who headed the Republic of China government during the 1930s. His detention was the crisis's central leverage over Nationalist policy.

Zhang Xueliang: A Manchurian warlord and military commander who detained Chiang Kai-shek in 1936. His troops carried out the detention that made the Xi'an crisis possible.
Second United Front: The Nationalist-Communist alliance formed in 1937 to resist Japanese invasion of China. The crisis helped secure the agreement to cooperate against Japan.
