Xiang Yu

Xiang Yu was a Chu military leader who helped overthrow the Qin dynasty and fought Liu Bang for control of China during the Chu–Han Contention.

Battle of Julu: A 207 BCE battle in which rebel forces led by Xiang Yu defeated a major Qin army. His victory at Julu established him as the rebellion’s foremost military commander.
Chu rebels: Insurgent forces from the former state of Chu that fought the Qin dynasty and competed for power after its collapse. They supplied Xiang Yu’s military base during the anti-Qin uprising.
Fan Zeng: A senior adviser to Xiang Yu during the struggle against Liu Bang. He urged Xiang Yu to eliminate Liu Bang before their rivalry became irreversible.
Chu state: A powerful ancient Chinese state that was conquered by Qin in 223 BCE. Xiang Yu’s family identity and political base came from the former Chu realm.
Records of the Grand Historian: A history of China completed by Sima Qian around the first century BCE. Its account of Xiang Yu strongly shaped how later generations understood his character and fall.
Hongmen Banquet: A 206 BCE banquet where Xiang Yu considered killing Liu Bang but allowed him to leave. Sparing Liu Bang became a defining decision in their struggle for power.
Zhang Han: A Qin general who led forces against the rebel armies during the dynasty’s final years. His surrender after Julu altered the balance among the insurgent leaders.
Yu Ji: A woman remembered in later Chinese tradition as Xiang Yu’s beloved companion. Her story became closely associated with Xiang Yu’s final days and cultural memory.
Qin dynasty: China’s first imperial dynasty, founded by Qin Shi Huang and overthrown in 206 BCE. Xiang Yu rose in rebellion against Qin rule and helped bring it down.
Sima Qian: A Han dynasty historian who wrote the Records of the Grand Historian. His narrative gives Xiang Yu a prominent, complex place despite his defeat by the Han.
