Knowra Xinjiang Xinjiang Xinjiang, officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is a region of northwestern China bordering eight countries. It is home to Uyghurs and other ethnic groups.
Uyghurs : A Turkic people, predominantly Muslim, whose historic homeland includes much of Xinjiang. Uyghurs are the region’s largest ethnic minority and a central part of its history and politics.
Tarim mummies : Naturally preserved human remains found in the Tarim Basin, some dating to the second millennium BCE. They illuminate the region’s ancient populations before the emergence of modern ethnic identities.
Abdurahim Otkur : A twentieth-century Uyghur writer and poet whose works explored Uyghur history and identity. His literature became a major expression of modern Uyghur cultural life.
Xinjiang conflict : A long-running set of political and security tensions involving the Chinese state and communities in Xinjiang. It encompasses episodes of unrest, state security campaigns, and disputes over political rights.
China–Pakistan Economic Corridor : A package of infrastructure and investment projects linking China with Pakistan, including routes from Xinjiang toward the Arabian Sea. The corridor is intended to connect Xinjiang with Pakistan’s ports and transport networks.
Tarim Basin : A vast endorheic basin in southern Xinjiang, bounded by the Tian Shan and Kunlun Mountains. Its oases and desert shaped settlement along the southern routes of the Silk Road.
Kingdom of Khotan : An ancient Buddhist kingdom centered on an oasis in the southern Tarim Basin. Khotan shows how oasis states connected Xinjiang to Indian, Iranian, and Chinese cultural worlds.
Sabit Damolla : A political leader who served as prime minister of the short-lived First East Turkestan Republic in 1933–1934. His government represents one attempt to establish an independent state in Xinjiang.
Xinjiang internment camps : Detention facilities in Xinjiang where large numbers of Uyghurs and other Muslims were held, especially from 2017 onward. Their reported scale and conditions have become a central international controversy.
Khorgos : A border city and major rail and logistics hub in northwestern Xinjiang, adjoining Kazakhstan. Its facilities support freight transfer between Chinese and Central Asian rail networks.
