Xu Shichang

Xu Shichang was a Chinese politician and statesman who served as president of the Republic of China from 1918 to 1922.

Beiyang Army: A Chinese military force organized in the late Qing dynasty that became central to Republican-era politics. Its commanders and networks shaped the political order in which Xu rose.
Anhui clique: A political-military faction in the Beiyang government led by Duan Qirui. Duan’s faction supported Xu’s election but remained a powerful rival within the government.
