Xunzi

Xunzi was a Confucian philosopher of the third century BCE who argued that human nature tends toward disorder and requires deliberate ethical cultivation.

Human nature: The innate dispositions and capacities characteristic of human beings. Xunzi argues that unchecked innate desires lead toward conflict and disorder.
Learning (Confucianism): The disciplined study and practice through which people acquire knowledge, virtue, and social competence. Xunzi presents learning as the means by which people become morally formed.
Warring States period: The era of rival Chinese states from 475 to 221 BCE, ending with Qin unification. Xunzi wrote amid the political fragmentation and intellectual competition of this period.
Han Fei: A Chinese political philosopher associated with Legalism and the late Warring States period. Tradition names Han Fei as one of Xunzi’s students, though their political conclusions diverged.
