Xylometazoline

Xylometazoline is a topical imidazoline decongestant that activates adrenergic receptors and constricts blood vessels in the nasal lining, temporarily easing congestion.

Alpha-adrenergic receptor: A cell-surface receptor activated by norepinephrine and related drugs, producing effects that include vascular smooth-muscle contraction. Xylometazoline stimulates these receptors in nasal vessels, narrowing them and reducing mucosal swelling.
Nasal congestion: A sensation of blocked nasal airflow, commonly caused by swelling of the nasal lining or excess secretions. Relieving this symptom is the main reason xylometazoline is used.
Imidazoline: A class of nitrogen-containing compounds whose members include drugs acting on adrenergic receptors. Xylometazoline belongs to this chemical family of decongestants.
Saline nasal spray: A salt-water solution sprayed into the nose to moisturize and rinse the nasal passages. It can ease dryness and clear mucus without constricting blood vessels or causing drug rebound.
Vasoconstriction: The narrowing of blood vessels caused by contraction of their smooth-muscle walls. This is the immediate physical change that reduces blood flow and swelling in the nasal lining.
Common cold: A usually mild upper respiratory infection caused by a range of viruses, especially rhinoviruses. Xylometazoline can temporarily ease the nasal blockage that often accompanies a cold.
Adrenergic agonist: A substance that activates receptors responsive to adrenaline or noradrenaline. Xylometazoline’s decongestant effect follows from its adrenergic receptor activity.
Intranasal corticosteroid: A corticosteroid medicine delivered into the nose to reduce inflammatory symptoms, especially in allergic rhinitis. Unlike xylometazoline, it targets inflammation and is suited to sustained allergy control.
Nasal mucosa: The moist, vascular lining of the nasal cavity, which warms, humidifies, and filters inhaled air. Xylometazoline acts locally on vessels within this tissue.
Allergic rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal lining caused by an allergic response to inhaled substances. The drug can briefly relieve congestion, though it does not treat the underlying allergy.
