Y-intercept

The point where a graph meets the y-axis, so its x-coordinate is zero. For a function, it represents the output at input zero when that value is defined.

Cartesian coordinate system: A system that locates points in a plane using perpendicular axes and ordered pairs of numbers. The y-axis and the zero x-coordinate define the intercept’s position.
Slope-intercept form: The linear equation form y = mx + b, where m is slope and b is the y-intercept’s vertical coordinate. Its constant term gives the intercept without plotting the line.
X-intercept: A point where a graph meets the x-axis, so its y-coordinate is zero. It uses the other axis and sets the other coordinate to zero.
Initial value: The value of a quantity at the starting point of a process or model. In a time-based linear model starting at zero, this value is the y-intercept.
Coordinate plane: A plane divided by perpendicular horizontal and vertical number lines called the x-axis and y-axis. The intercept is a point in this plane lying on its vertical axis.
Linear equation: An equation whose graph is a straight line, typically expressible in two variables. Setting its x-coordinate to zero locates the line’s y-intercept.
Slope: A measure of a line’s steepness, given by the change in y divided by the change in x. Slope describes a line’s direction; the y-intercept locates where it meets the vertical axis.
Linear regression: A statistical method that models the relationship between variables with a best-fitting straight line. The fitted line’s y-intercept estimates the response when the predictor is zero.
X-axis: The horizontal axis in a Cartesian coordinate plane, where the vertical coordinate is zero. Its intersection with the y-axis is the origin, a possible y-intercept.
Function notation: A notation such as f(x) that names a function and indicates its input. Evaluating f(0) gives the y-coordinate of the intercept when zero is in the domain.
