Yaeyama Islands

The Yaeyama Islands are a group of islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, southwest of the Miyako Islands and near Taiwan. They include Japan’s westernmost inhabited island, Yonaguni.

Ishigaki Island: An island in Okinawa Prefecture and the largest population center in the Yaeyama Islands. It is the archipelago’s principal transport and administrative hub.
Ryukyu Kingdom: A kingdom that ruled the Ryukyu Islands from the fifteenth century until its annexation by Japan in 1879. Yaeyama was a southern territory within the kingdom’s realm.
Yaeyama language: A Japonic language traditionally spoken in the Yaeyama Islands and distinct from standard Japanese. It preserves local speech traditions across the archipelago.
Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park: A national park in Okinawa Prefecture protecting landscapes and marine areas around Iriomote and Ishigaki. It safeguards representative terrestrial and coastal ecosystems in Yaeyama.
Taiwan: An island in East Asia, located southwest of the Yaeyama Islands across the Yonaguni Channel. Its proximity gives the archipelago a close geographic connection to Taiwan.
Iriomote Island: A mountainous, forested island in Okinawa Prefecture, known for mangroves and subtropical rainforest. Its extensive forests and wetlands contrast with Ishigaki’s more urban landscape.
Satsuma Domain: A Japanese domain that invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609 and thereafter exercised substantial control over it. Its invasion shaped the kingdom’s rule over Yaeyama.
Yonaguni language: A Japonic language spoken on Yonaguni Island and distinct from Yaeyama and standard Japanese. Its separate identity reflects the archipelago’s linguistic diversity.
Iriomote cat: An endangered wildcat found only on Iriomote Island. Its survival depends on conservation of Iriomote’s habitats.
Yonaguni Channel: A strait separating Yonaguni Island from Taiwan. It forms the narrow maritime gap between Yaeyama and Taiwan.
