Yajurveda

The Yajurveda is one of the four Vedas, containing sacrificial formulas and prose instructions used by priests in ancient Indian rituals.

Veda: A corpus of ancient Sanskrit sacred texts foundational to Hindu traditions. The Yajurveda is one of the four Vedas.
Yajna: A Vedic sacrificial rite performed through offerings, recitation, and prescribed ritual actions. The Yajurveda supplies much of the language and procedure used in yajna.
Shukla Yajurveda: The “White” Yajurveda, whose sacrificial formulas are presented separately from explanatory prose. Its organized separation of formulas and commentary distinguishes one major form of the text.
Oral tradition of the Vedas: The memorized and recited transmission of Vedic texts across generations. Yajurvedic recensions survived through disciplined oral preservation.
Rigveda: The Veda whose hymns praise deities and form a foundational collection of Sanskrit poetry. Its hymns were recited alongside Yajurvedic formulas in major sacrifices.
Vedic Sanskrit: The early form of Sanskrit used in the Vedas and related texts. Its archaic language preserves formulas shaped by oral recitation.
Adhvaryu: The Vedic priest responsible for the practical performance of a sacrifice. The adhvaryu recites Yajurvedic formulas while carrying out ritual actions.
Krishna Yajurveda: The “Black” Yajurveda, whose formula collections interweave explanatory ritual prose. Its interwoven presentation contrasts with the White Yajurveda's arrangement.
Vedic period: A broad period of South Asian history associated with the composition and transmission of the Vedas. The Yajurveda emerged within the ritual culture of this historical period.
Samaveda: The Veda of melodies and chants, largely adapted from Rigvedic verses for ritual singing. Its chants and Yajurvedic procedures served complementary roles in sacrifice.
