Yamato-class battleship

The Yamato class was a pair of Imperial Japanese Navy battleships, Yamato and Musashi, built during World War II. They were the largest battleships ever completed, armed with nine 460 mm guns.

Yamato-class 46 cm/45 Type 94 naval gun: A 460 mm naval gun mounted on Yamato-class battleships, the largest caliber fitted to any completed battleship. Nine of these guns formed the class’s main battery and gave it exceptional range and shell weight.

Musashi: The second Yamato-class battleship, commissioned in 1942 and sunk during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Its loss to repeated air attacks demonstrated the class’s vulnerability without air cover.
Bismarck-class battleship: A German battleship class consisting of Bismarck and Tirpitz, completed during World War II. Its ships were formidable contemporaries but carried smaller main guns than the Yamato class.
Battle of Midway: A June 1942 naval battle in which United States forces defeated Japan’s carrier fleet near Midway Atoll. The loss of Japanese carriers strengthened the case for air power over battleship-centered plans.
