Knowra Yan Fu Yan Fu Yan Fu (1854–1921) was a Chinese scholar and translator whose renderings of Western political, philosophical, and scientific works shaped late Qing debates about reform and national survival.
Late Qing reforms : Political and institutional changes pursued in China during the final decades of the Qing dynasty. Yan Fu’s translations supplied arguments that reformers used amid efforts to strengthen the Qing state.
Evolution and Ethics : Thomas Henry Huxley’s 1893 essay collection arguing that ethical conduct can restrain nature’s struggle for existence. Yan Fu’s translation, Tianyan lun, presented evolution as a framework for China’s national predicament.
Thomas Henry Huxley : An English biologist and public intellectual who defended evolutionary theory and wrote Evolution and Ethics. Yan Fu translated Huxley’s essay collection and reshaped its argument for Chinese debates.

Xinmin congbao : A Chinese reformist journal published by Liang Qichao in Japan from 1902 to 1907. The journal helped circulate political ideas in the same transnational reform milieu that received Yan Fu’s work.
Royal Naval College : A British naval officer-training institution at Greenwich, founded in 1873 as the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Yan Fu studied there from 1877 to 1879, deepening his knowledge of Western naval science.
The Study of Sociology : Herbert Spencer’s 1873 book arguing that social institutions can be studied systematically. Yan Fu’s translation introduced Spencer’s account of society as an object of scientific inquiry.
