Yangtze Plain

A low-lying alluvial region in central and eastern China, formed chiefly by the Yangtze River and its tributaries. Its fertile floodplains and lakes support dense settlement and intensive agriculture.

Yangtze River: Asia’s longest river, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau across China to the East China Sea. Its floodwaters and sediment have shaped the plain’s central lowlands.
Floodplain: Low-lying land beside a river that is periodically inundated by floods. Floodplains make up much of the Yangtze Plain’s river margins.
Rice cultivation: The growing of rice in flooded fields or other managed conditions. Warm conditions, fertile soils, and abundant water support extensive rice farming.
Population density: The number of people living within a defined area. Fertile farmland and navigable rivers helped sustain dense populations on the plain.
North China Plain: A broad alluvial lowland in northern China, formed mainly by the Yellow River and other rivers. It is China’s other major agricultural plain, with a drier climate and different river history.
Alluvial plain: A flat or gently sloping landform built from sediment deposited by rivers. The Yangtze Plain is a large regional example of this landform.
Fluvial sediment: Mineral and organic particles transported and deposited by flowing water. River-borne sediment builds and replenishes the plain’s alluvial soils.
Jiangnan: A historic region south of the lower Yangtze, centered on its river and lake network. Its prosperous towns and irrigated fields exemplify the plain’s long-settled south.
Urbanization in China: The growth of cities and urban populations across China. Rapid urban expansion has converted farmland and wetlands across the region.
Sichuan Basin: An enclosed basin in southwestern China, surrounded by mountains and drained by the Yangtze system. It lies upstream and contrasts with the open, low-lying eastern plain.
