Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar

Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar was a 9th-century Iranian military leader who founded the Saffarid dynasty and built a short-lived empire from Sistan.

Sistan: A historical region spanning parts of southeastern Iran and southwestern Afghanistan, centered on the Helmand basin. Its frontier towns and military networks formed the base of Ya'qub's ascent.
Saffarid dynasty: An Iranian dynasty founded by Ya'qub ibn al-Layth that ruled Sistan and neighboring territories. Ya'qub's conquests established the dynasty and its center of power at Zaranj.
Battle of Dayr al-Aqul: An 876 battle in which Abbasid forces defeated Ya'qub ibn al-Layth near Baghdad. The defeat ended his westward advance toward the Abbasid capital.
