Yarn count

Yarn count is a numerical measure of yarn fineness, expressed either as mass per unit length or as length per unit mass. Its value depends on the numbering system used.

Linear density: Linear density is mass per unit length, commonly expressed in tex or denier. Direct yarn counts express fineness as mass per unit length.
English cotton count: English cotton count is an indirect system measuring the number of 840-yard hanks per pound. It is a common count whose larger values indicate finer cotton yarn.
Yarn numbering: Yarn numbering is the assignment of count values to yarns under a specified convention. Manufacturers use it to specify and compare yarn fineness in production.
Yarn diameter: Yarn diameter is the cross-sectional width of a yarn. Count measures mass or length per mass, not width; diameter also depends on packing.
Tex: Tex is a direct linear-density unit equal to one gram per 1,000 metres. It gives yarn count a standard direct unit with higher values indicating heavier yarn.
Metric count: Metric count is an indirect system measuring kilometres of yarn per kilogram. Its length-per-mass convention makes it straightforward to compare with other indirect counts.
Fabric weight: Fabric weight is the mass of a textile fabric per unit area or length. Yarn count helps determine the mass of fabric made with a given construction.
Fabric density: Fabric density describes the number of yarns or stitches within a given fabric area. It concerns yarn arrangement in fabric rather than the fineness of an individual yarn.
Denier: Denier is a direct linear-density unit equal to one gram per 9,000 metres. It is widely used to state the fineness of filament yarns.
Yarn count conversion: Yarn count conversion translates a yarn's numerical value between different count systems. Conversion is necessary because systems use different units and opposite number directions.
