Yasser Arafat

Yasser Arafat was a Palestinian political leader who chaired the Palestine Liberation Organization and became president of the Palestinian Authority. He led the Palestinian national movement through armed struggle, diplomacy, and negotiations with Israel.

Nakba: The mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab–Israeli war and Israel’s establishment. The refugee experience shaped the political cause Arafat organized around.

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3210: A 1974 resolution inviting the PLO to participate in General Assembly deliberations on Palestine. Arafat’s 1974 address to the Assembly marked the PLO’s diplomatic arrival.
Camp David Summit (2000): A 2000 summit where Israeli, Palestinian, and US leaders sought a final-status agreement without reaching one. Disagreement over the summit’s offers and failure remains central to assessments of Arafat’s diplomacy.
