Yazid I

Yazid I was the second Umayyad caliph, ruling from 680 to 683. His reign saw the killing of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala and revolts that challenged Umayyad rule.

Battle of Karbala: A battle in 680 in which forces of the Umayyad governor of Kufa killed Husayn ibn Ali and his small party. Its killing of Husayn became the defining event of Yazid’s reign.
Muawiya I: The founder of Umayyad rule as a caliph, reigning from 661 to 680. As Yazid’s father and predecessor, he secured the pledge that Yazid would succeed him.
Ali ibn Abi Talib: The fourth Sunni caliph and first Shia imam, whose descendants became central to disputes over leadership of the Muslim community. Yazid’s conflict with Husayn carried forward disputes surrounding Ali’s family and political legacy.
Ashura: The tenth day of Muharram, observed by Muslims in varied ways and especially associated with Husayn’s death in Shia Islam. Its mourning practices preserve the memory of Husayn’s killing during Yazid’s reign.
Husayn ibn Ali: A grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali, killed with his companions at Karbala in 680. His refusal to recognize Yazid’s rule led to the confrontation at Karbala.
Umayyad Caliphate: The caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750, with its center in Damascus. Yazid inherited its institutions and became its second caliph.
Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad: An Umayyad governor of Iraq who played a leading role in the events that culminated at Karbala. His authority in Kufa shaped the response to Husayn’s movement.
Shia Islam: A major branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants to have a special claim to leadership of the Muslim community. Karbala became a foundational event in Shia identity and devotion.
Second Fitna: A civil war in the early Islamic community, conventionally dated from 680 to 692. Yazid’s accession and death helped ignite this wider succession conflict.
Hereditary succession: The transfer of political office through family lineage rather than selection from a wider body. Muawiya’s designation of his son made dynastic succession a central dispute.
