Yellow River course changes are historical shifts in the river’s channel and outlet across northern China, driven by floods, sedimentation, and human interventions.

Yellow River: The second-longest river in China, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau across the North China Plain to the Bohai Sea. Its unusually heavy sediment load makes its lower channel prone to aggradation and avulsion.
Huayuankou: A site on the Yellow River near Zhengzhou, where a major levee breach occurred in 1938. The breach redirected the river southward during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
North China Plain: A vast lowland in eastern China formed largely by sediment from the Yellow, Huai, and Hai river systems. Repeated lower-river shifts redistributed sediment and flood risk across this densely settled plain.
Yellow River northward course: The lower Yellow River route that reached the Bohai Sea north of the Shandong Peninsula. It contrasts with the long southward route through the Huai basin before the 1855 shift.

Yellow River southward course: The lower Yellow River route that flowed south across the North China Plain toward the Huai River system. This route prevailed from 1128 to 1855, unlike the present northward course.
Loess Plateau: A region of north-central China covered by thick deposits of windblown silt. Eroded loess supplies much of the sediment that raises the Yellow River bed.
Yellow River flood of 1887: A catastrophic Yellow River flood that inundated the North China Plain after the river breached its banks. Its destructive flooding belongs to the era of the river’s northward lower course.
