Knowra Yemeni Civil War Yemeni Civil War A conflict that began in 2014 between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Houthi forces, widened by competing domestic factions and extensive foreign intervention.
Houthi movement : A Yemeni political and armed movement rooted in Zaydi Shiism that controls the capital, Sana’a, and much of northern Yemen. Its seizure of Sana’a in 2014 triggered the conflict’s decisive escalation.
Yemeni Revolution : The 2011 uprising that ended Ali Abdullah Saleh’s long presidency and began Yemen’s political transition. The transition left institutions weak and power struggles unresolved before war began.
Yemeni humanitarian crisis : A prolonged emergency involving displacement, food insecurity, disease, and restricted access to essential services in Yemen. Years of fighting, economic collapse, and access restrictions have driven immense civilian suffering.
Yemeni civil war (1994) : A brief 1994 war in which Yemen’s northern government defeated a southern secessionist movement after unification. It was an earlier conflict over unity, distinct from the war beginning in 2014.
Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi : A Yemeni politician who served as president from 2012 until 2022 and led the internationally recognized government during the war’s early years. His government became the principal opposing authority to Houthi rule.
Ali Abdullah Saleh : A Yemeni military and political leader who ruled Yemen from 1978 to 2012 and later allied with Houthi forces. His alliance with the Houthis helped them capture Sana’a; it ended with his death in 2017.
Famine in Yemen : Severe food insecurity in Yemen caused by conflict, economic disruption, and constraints on food access and aid. War-related disruption has made hunger a central and recurring threat.
Yemeni civil war (1962–1970) : A war in North Yemen between royalists and republicans after the 1962 revolution, involving foreign intervention. It is a separate Yemeni conflict with different factions, causes, and political stakes.
Saudi-led intervention in Yemen : A military campaign launched by a Saudi-led coalition in 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government against Houthi forces. The intervention transformed the domestic conflict into a major regional war.
Zaydi Islam : A branch of Shia Islam historically prominent in northern Yemen, with distinctive legal and theological traditions. Zaydi identity informs the Houthis’ roots, but does not by itself explain the war.
