Yemeni unification

Yemeni unification was the 22 May 1990 merger of the Yemen Arab Republic and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen into the Republic of Yemen.

North Yemen: North Yemen was the common name for the Yemen Arab Republic, which existed from 1962 to 1990. Its republican government negotiated the merger with the southern state.
Cairo Agreement (1972): An agreement in 1972 in which North and South Yemen endorsed eventual unification and outlined steps toward it. It established an early framework for the union later completed in 1990.
1993 Yemeni parliamentary election: Yemen’s first parliamentary election after unification, held in April 1993. Its results shifted the balance among the parties sharing power after the merger.
Yemeni federalism: A system that divides political authority between Yemen’s central government and subnational regions. Federal proposals sought to address regional imbalances the unitary union left unresolved.
South Yemen: South Yemen was the common name for the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen, which existed from 1967 to 1990. Its socialist government joined North Yemen in the 1990 union.
Tripoli Agreement (1972): A 1972 agreement between North and South Yemen that set principles for a unified state. Its proposed constitutional principles informed subsequent unity negotiations.
Yemeni Civil War (1994): A war between Yemen’s northern-led government and southern secessionists from May to July 1994. It ended the southern attempt to reverse unification and consolidated central rule.
South Yemen independence movement: Political campaigns seeking restoration of an independent state in southern Yemen. Its goal rejects the permanent union established in 1990.
Yemen Arab Republic: The republican state in northern Yemen established after the 1962 revolution against the imamate. It was the formal northern partner in the unification agreement.
Kuwait Agreement (1979): An agreement signed in Kuwait after fighting between North and South Yemen in 1979, renewing their commitment to unity. It revived the unification process after armed conflict between the two states.
