Yeongjo of Joseon

Yeongjo was the 21st king of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, ruling from 1724 to 1776. He pursued administrative reforms and strengthened royal authority while managing factional conflict.

Tangpyeong policy: A Joseon policy of balancing political factions to limit destructive partisan conflict. Yeongjo made factional balance a central method of royal government.
Imo Incident: The 1762 killing of Crown Prince Sado on Yeongjo’s orders after years of conflict. This family catastrophe exposed the severe personal consequences of Yeongjo’s exercise of royal power.
Queen Jeongseong: Yeongjo’s first queen consort, who held the position from 1724 until her death in 1757. Her long tenure at court spanned the first half of Yeongjo’s reign.
Joseon dynasty: A Korean kingdom that ruled from 1392 to 1897 and shaped the peninsula’s political and cultural history. Yeongjo’s reforms strengthened the monarchy within this dynasty’s institutions.
Gyunyeok law: A 1750 tax reform that reduced the military cloth levy on commoners and funded the shortfall through other revenues. This reform exemplified Yeongjo’s effort to ease commoner burdens without abandoning state revenue.
Crown Prince Sado: The son of Yeongjo who died in 1762 after being confined in a rice chest by royal order. Sado’s death became the defining crisis of Yeongjo’s later reign.
Queen Jeongsun: Yeongjo’s second queen consort, who became queen in 1759 and later served as regent. Her later political influence connected Yeongjo’s court to the regency after his death.
Joseon factionalism: Political competition among scholar-official factions that shaped Joseon court and government. Yeongjo sought to contain the factional conflict that had repeatedly destabilized court politics.
Kyujanggak: A royal library and scholarly institution founded by King Jeongjo in 1776. Jeongjo’s institution extended the royal-centered scholarship and administration fostered under Yeongjo.
King Jeongjo: The 22nd king of Joseon, ruling from 1776 to 1800, and grandson of Yeongjo. Jeongjo succeeded Yeongjo and continued efforts to strengthen the monarchy.
