Yitzhak Shamir

Yitzhak Shamir was an Israeli politician who served as prime minister from 1983 to 1984 and from 1986 to 1992. Before Israel’s founding, he led Lehi, an underground Zionist militant group.

Menachem Begin: An Israeli politician who led the Irgun and served as prime minister from 1977 to 1983. Begin preceded Shamir as Likud leader and prime minister.
Lehi: A Jewish underground organization in Mandatory Palestine that fought British rule and sought an independent Jewish state. Shamir led Lehi after its founder, Yair Stern, was killed.

Revisionist Zionism: A Zionist current associated with Ze’ev Jabotinsky that advocated Jewish sovereignty on both sides of the Jordan River. Shamir’s political outlook belonged to the revisionist tradition behind Likud.
