Yohannes IV

Yohannes IV was emperor of Ethiopia from 1872 to 1889. He consolidated imperial authority, defeated Egyptian invasions, and died fighting Mahdist forces.

Battle of Assam: An 1871 battle in which Kassa Mercha defeated Emperor Tekle Giyorgis II. The victory established Kassa’s military dominance before his coronation as Yohannes IV.
Ras Alula Engida: An Ethiopian general and governor who commanded forces under Yohannes IV. Alula led campaigns that defended the empire against Egypt and the Mahdists.
Egyptian–Ethiopian War: A conflict from 1874 to 1876 in which Egypt attempted to invade Ethiopia. Yohannes’s forces turned this invasion into a major defense of Ethiopian sovereignty.
