Yongzheng Emperor

The fifth Qing emperor, Yongzheng ruled China from 1722 to 1735. He strengthened imperial administration, reformed taxation, and secured his succession after a contested rise to power.

Yongzheng reforms: Administrative, fiscal, and military changes enacted under the Yongzheng Emperor to strengthen Qing rule. These policies defined his effort to centralize authority and improve state revenues.
Secret succession system: A Qing succession practice in which an emperor privately designated an heir before his death. Yongzheng used it to reduce the factional struggle that had surrounded his own accession.
Kangxi Emperor: The fourth Qing emperor, who ruled from 1661 to 1722 and was Yongzheng’s father. His long reign left a crowded succession and a powerful imperial legacy for Yongzheng.

Longkodo: A Qing court official who played a prominent role in the transition to Yongzheng’s reign. His influence in the succession made him both useful and suspect to the new emperor.
Great Inquisition of Lü Liuliang: A Qing political prosecution of Lü Liuliang’s writings and associates during the Yongzheng reign. The case shows how the court treated criticism of Manchu rule as a threat to the state.
