York

York is a historic city in northern England whose strategic position made it a major political center under Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, and medieval rule.

Eboracum: Eboracum was the Roman fortress and settlement established at the site of present-day York. Its Roman walls and street plan began the urban history later rulers inherited.

Ælla of Northumbria: Ælla was a ninth-century king of Northumbria who ruled during the Viking invasion of England. His defeat and death are associated in later accounts with the Norse seizure of York.
River Foss: The River Foss is a tributary of the Ouse that meets it at York. Its confluence with the Ouse helped shape York’s defensible and commercially useful position.

Battle of Stamford Bridge: The Battle of Stamford Bridge was a 1066 English victory over a Norwegian invasion near York. The battle took place close to York during a succession crisis that ended with Norman conquest.
