Yuan Chonghuan

Yuan Chonghuan was a Ming dynasty commander and official who defended the northeastern frontier against Later Jin forces. The Chongzhen emperor ordered his execution in 1630 amid accusations of treason.

Battle of Ningyuan: A 1626 battle in which Ming forces under Yuan Chonghuan repelled a Later Jin attack on Ningyuan. This victory established Yuan’s reputation as a defender of the northeastern frontier.
Liaodong: A northeastern Chinese region between the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula, contested by the Ming and Manchu states. Liaodong was the frontier where Yuan’s defensive strategy operated.

Nurhaci: The Jurchen leader who founded the Later Jin state and began the conquest that led to the Qing dynasty. Yuan’s early frontier victories checked Nurhaci’s expansion into Ming territory.
Later Jin: A Jurchen state founded by Nurhaci in 1616, predecessor of the Qing dynasty. Its expansion created the military crisis that brought Yuan to prominence.
Ming dynasty loyalist martyrdom: The posthumous commemoration of people who suffered or died for the Ming dynasty. Yuan’s reputation was reshaped by later portrayals of his execution as an unjust sacrifice.
