Yue Fei

Yue Fei (1103–1142) was a Song dynasty general who fought the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty during the Jin–Song Wars. His execution and later rehabilitation made him a lasting symbol of loyalty in Chinese culture.

Emperor Gaozong of Song: The first emperor of the Southern Song dynasty, who ruled from 1127 to 1162. Gaozong recalled Yue Fei from the northern campaigns and ordered his execution.
Battle of Yancheng: A 1140 battle in which Song forces under Yue Fei defeated a Jin army near Yancheng. It became one of the clearest battlefield successes associated with Yue Fei.
Jingkang Incident: The 1127 capture of the Song capitals and emperors by Jin forces, which ended the Northern Song dynasty. The crisis created the conditions for Yue Fei’s campaigns to defend the surviving Song court.
Jingzhong baoguo: A Chinese phrase meaning “serve the country with utmost loyalty,” traditionally associated with Yue Fei. The phrase condenses the virtue most often attached to Yue Fei’s image.
Qin Hui: A Song dynasty chancellor associated with negotiating peace with the Jin and Yue Fei’s execution. Later tradition cast Qin Hui as the principal official behind Yue Fei’s death.
Battle of Zhuxianzhen: A 1140 engagement near Kaifeng, remembered as part of Yue Fei’s northward campaign against the Jin. Later accounts made this campaign episode a symbol of Yue Fei’s advance toward recovering the north.
Jurchen people: A Tungusic-speaking people of northeast Asia who established the Jin dynasty in the twelfth century. The Jin army Yue Fei fought was built around Jurchen rule and military power.
Yue Fei in popular culture: The portrayal of Yue Fei in Chinese literature, opera, visual art, and popular storytelling. These portrayals helped turn historical events into a widely shared heroic narrative.
Han Shizhong: A Southern Song general who fought the Jin and opposed the court’s decision to execute Yue Fei. Han challenged the official case against Yue Fei after his arrest.
Jin–Song Wars: A series of wars between the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty and the Song dynasty from the twelfth to thirteenth centuries. Yue Fei’s military career unfolded within this prolonged struggle.
