Yule

Yule is a midwinter festival with Germanic roots, later associated with Christmas customs. Its name and practices survive in modern celebrations, especially among some Neopagan traditions.

Germanic peoples: A group of peoples who spoke Germanic languages and shaped much of northern and western Europe. Yule arose among Germanic-speaking communities before Christianity spread through northern Europe.
Midwinter: The middle of winter, commonly marked by the shortest days and longest nights of the year. Yule's timing centered on winter's darkest period and the turn toward longer days.
Christianization of Scandinavia: The gradual conversion of Scandinavian societies from pre-Christian religions to Christianity. Conversion transformed Yule's religious setting and helped align it with Christmas.
Yule (etymology): The study of the word Yule's history and its relationship to Germanic forms such as Old Norse jól. The word's origin is better documented than the festival's earliest practices.
Heimskringla: A collection of sagas about Norwegian kings, written by Snorri Sturluson in the thirteenth century. Its account of King Haakon links a pre-Christian Yule feast with the Christmas observance.
Winter solstice: The annual moment when one hemisphere is tilted farthest from the Sun, producing its shortest day. The solstice offers a seasonal frame for Yule, though its exact historical date is uncertain.
Christmas: A Christian feast celebrating the birth of Jesus, observed on December 25 in many churches. Christmas became closely associated with Yule as older seasonal customs were adapted.
Æcerbot: An Old English agricultural charm recorded in a manuscript from around the tenth century. It is sometimes connected to midwinter customs, but does not establish a Yule rite.
Hákonar saga góða: A saga of Haakon the Good, preserved in Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla. It describes Haakon's law aligning Yule with the Christian celebration of Christmas.
Blót: A pre-Christian Norse ritual offering made to gods, spirits, or ancestors. Later Norse accounts associate Yule feasts with sacrificial offerings.
