Yupik peoples

Yupik peoples are Indigenous peoples of southwestern Alaska and the Russian Far East, connected by related languages and cultural traditions adapted to Arctic and subarctic environments.

Central Alaskan Yup'ik: An Indigenous Yupik people whose communities are concentrated in western and southwestern Alaska. They are the largest Yupik population and anchor many accounts of Yupik life in Alaska.
Subsistence: A way of meeting basic needs through locally available food, materials, and labor. Hunting, fishing, and gathering have shaped Yupik economies and seasonal routines.

Bering Sea: A marginal sea of the northern Pacific Ocean between Alaska and Russia. Its marine resources and coastlines have long connected Yupik communities to food and travel.
Old Bering Sea culture: An archaeological culture of the Bering Strait region known for elaborate ivory carvings and maritime lifeways. Its remains document ancient cultural connections near the present-day Yupik homeland.
Edward William Nelson: An American naturalist who documented Indigenous cultures and wildlife in western Alaska during the late nineteenth century. His observations include detailed records of Yup'ik material culture and seasonal life.
