Yuwen Tai

Yuwen Tai (507–556) was a military and political leader who dominated Western Wei and laid institutional foundations for the Northern Zhou dynasty.

Western Wei: A Chinese dynasty that ruled parts of northern China from 535 to 557. Yuwen Tai exercised power behind its emperors and organized its military and government.
Northern Wei: A dynasty that ruled much of northern China from 386 to 534. Its collapse created the rival western and eastern regimes in which Yuwen Tai rose.
Northern Zhou: A Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 557 to 581. Yuwen Tai’s son founded it, and its institutions drew heavily on his regime.
Yuwen Yong: The Northern Zhou emperor known as Emperor Wu, who ruled from 560 to 578. As Yuwen Tai’s son, he converted the family’s political inheritance into territorial expansion.
Six Armies of the Western Wei: The principal military formations organized under Western Wei rule. They embodied Yuwen Tai’s military system and linked armies to political authority.
Six Towns Rebellion: A major uprising against Northern Wei that began in 523 among frontier garrisons. The rebellion destabilized Northern Wei and accelerated the military upheavals behind Yuwen Tai’s ascent.
Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou: The Northern Zhou ruler who defeated Northern Qi and briefly unified northern China. His military expansion built on the state and army structures Yuwen Tai had established.
Yuwen Hu: A Northern Zhou regent who dominated court politics after Yuwen Tai’s death. He preserved the Yuwen family’s power while controlling the succession and government.
Fubing system: A military organization that combined local communities, part-time soldiers, and state service. Its early form developed under Yuwen Tai’s regime to mobilize soldiers and sustain frontier defense.
Erzhu Rong: A powerful general who intervened in Northern Wei politics during the early sixth century. The power struggle after his death opened opportunities for the commanders who divided Northern Wei.
