Yuzhny Island

Yuzhny Island is the southern of Novaya Zemlya’s two main islands, between the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. It is separated from Severny Island by the narrow Matochkin Strait.

Nenets people: The Nenets are an Indigenous Samoyedic people of northern Russia, traditionally associated with reindeer herding and Arctic environments. Nenets communities historically inhabited Novaya Zemlya before Soviet-era displacement.
Arctic tundra: Arctic tundra is a treeless biome with permafrost, low-growing plants, and a short growing season. It characterizes much of Yuzhny Island’s terrestrial environment.
Severny Island: Severny Island is the northern of Novaya Zemlya’s two main islands. Matochkin Strait separates it from Yuzhny Island.
Rogachevo: Rogachevo is a settlement on Yuzhny Island in the Russian Arctic. It is one of the island’s two principal settlements.
Tsar Bomba: Tsar Bomba was a Soviet thermonuclear device detonated over Novaya Zemlya in 1961. Its test made the archipelago internationally known for nuclear testing.
Vladimir Rusanov: Vladimir Rusanov was a Russian geologist and Arctic explorer who led expeditions to Novaya Zemlya. His surveys contributed to geographic knowledge of the archipelago.
Permafrost: Permafrost is ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. It shapes soil, drainage, and infrastructure conditions on the island.
