Zand dynasty

The Zand dynasty was an Iranian dynasty that ruled much of Persia from 1751 to 1794, founded by Karim Khan Zand. Its government centered on Shiraz and never adopted the title of shah during Karim Khan’s rule.

Karim Khan Zand: The Zand ruler who governed much of Persia from 1751 until his death in 1779. His rise established Zand rule, and his authority shaped its political character.
Vakil al-Ra'aya: A Persian title meaning “deputy of the people,” used by Karim Khan Zand instead of shah. The title expressed Karim Khan’s distinctive claim to govern without formal kingship.
Arg of Karim Khan: A fortified citadel in Shiraz built as Karim Khan Zand’s urban residence. Its scale and location embody the dynasty’s concentration of authority in Shiraz.
Battle of Krtsanisi: A 1795 battle in which the Qajar army captured and devastated Tbilisi. After defeating the Zands, Agha Mohammad Khan turned north and extended Qajar power into the Caucasus.
Nader Shah: An Iranian ruler who founded the Afsharid dynasty and conquered a vast empire in the eighteenth century. His assassination in 1747 fractured the empire from which Zand power emerged.
Zand succession crisis: The struggle for power among Zand claimants after Karim Khan’s death in 1779. The dynasty’s authority weakened as rival successors fought for control.

Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar: The founder of the Qajar dynasty, who unified Iran after defeating the Zands. His campaigns exploited Zand factional conflict and ended the dynasty’s rule.
