Zanj Rebellion

A major revolt against the Abbasid Caliphate in southern Iraq from 869 to 883, led by Ali ibn Muhammad and involving enslaved East African laborers and other groups.

Basra: A major port city in southern Iraq near the head of the Persian Gulf. The rebels sacked Basra in 871, a defining demonstration of their military reach.
Zanj: A medieval Arabic term used for people associated with the East African coast and, in some contexts, their descendants. The rebels’ name linked the uprising to enslaved laborers described by Arabic sources as Zanj.
Ali ibn Muhammad: A rebel leader who led the Zanj uprising against the Abbasid Caliphate from 869 until his death in 883. His claims, background, and leadership shaped the movement’s public identity.
