Sultanate of Zanzibar

An East African sultanate based on Zanzibar that became a major Indian Ocean trading power, especially through commerce in cloves, ivory, and enslaved people.

Omani Empire: An empire ruled by Omani dynasties that controlled territories and trade networks around the western Indian Ocean. Omani expansion brought Zanzibar under the dynasty from which the sultanate emerged.
Indian Ocean trade: A network of maritime commerce linking societies around the Indian Ocean basin across many centuries. Zanzibar’s merchants and ports depended on these routes to connect East Africa with Arabia and Asia.
Maji Maji Rebellion: An anticolonial uprising in German East Africa from 1905 to 1907, suppressed with extensive violence and famine. The revolt unfolded in mainland territories where Zanzibar’s earlier commercial influence had extended.
Sultanate of Oman: A state on the southeastern Arabian Peninsula ruled by a sultan. Oman was the dynasty’s Arabian base, while Zanzibar became its East African political and commercial center.
Said bin Sultan: The Omani ruler who transferred his capital to Zanzibar in the nineteenth century and expanded its commercial influence. His move to Zanzibar made the island the center of Omani power in East Africa.
Clove: The aromatic dried flower bud of a tropical tree, cultivated as a valuable spice. Clove plantations became a major source of the sultanate’s wealth and export revenue.
German East Africa: A German colony in East Africa from the 1880s until the First World War. The mainland colony bordered the sphere of influence shaped by Zanzibar and its treaties.
Sultanate of Kilwa: A medieval Swahili coastal state centered on Kilwa Kisiwani in present-day Tanzania. Kilwa offers an earlier example of an East African coastal polity whose power rested on Indian Ocean trade.
Zanzibar Revolution: The January 1964 uprising that overthrew Zanzibar’s sultan and established a republic. It ended the sultanate after independence and a brief constitutional monarchy.
Zanzibar slave trade: The trade in enslaved people routed through Zanzibar and other East African ports, especially during the nineteenth century. Its revenues and labor system were deeply entangled with the sultanate’s commercial power.
