Zaydism

Zaydism is a branch of Shia Islam that recognizes Zayd ibn Ali and holds that a qualified descendant of Muhammad may become imam through religious learning and political leadership.

Imamate in Shia Islam: The doctrine that religious and political leadership of the Muslim community belongs to designated or qualified imams. Zaydism defines the imam as a qualified descendant who claims leadership and rises against injustice.
Zaydi imamate: The Zaydi doctrine that a learned, just descendant of Muhammad may claim leadership and establish his rule through revolt. This doctrine explains how an imam is qualified and how he comes to lead.
Battle of Kufa (740): The failed uprising led by Zayd ibn Ali against the Umayyad governor of Kufa in 740. Zayd’s death in this revolt became a formative event in the tradition’s memory.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, whose traditions recognize the first four caliphs as rightly guided leaders. Zaydism shares legal and theological ground with Sunni traditions while affirming Ali’s priority.
Yemen: A country at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula, with a long history of Zaydi political influence in its north. Zaydi institutions and communities have profoundly shaped northern Yemen’s history.
Zayd ibn Ali: An eighth-century descendant of Muhammad whose revolt against Umayyad rule gave Zaydism its name. His uprising and teachings became the tradition’s founding reference point.
Ijtihad: Independent legal reasoning used by qualified Muslim jurists to derive rulings from Islamic sources. Zaydi imams are expected to possess substantial religious knowledge and legal judgment.
Umayyad Caliphate: The Sunni-led caliphate that ruled much of the Islamic world from 661 to 750. Zayd ibn Ali rebelled against Umayyad authority and its treatment of the Prophet’s family.
Ja'fari jurisprudence: The Islamic legal tradition associated with Ja'far al-Sadiq and followed especially by Twelver Shia Muslims. Zaydi law developed separately and often resembles Sunni legal methods more than Ja'fari law.
Sa'dah: A city and governorate in northern Yemen that became a major center of Zaydi scholarship and political activity. Its religious institutions anchor Zaydism in the region where the tradition remains strongest.
