Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin is a yellow xanthophyll carotenoid found in plants and the human retina. It helps dissipate excess light energy in photosynthesis and protects retinal cells from light-induced oxidative damage.

Xanthophyll cycle: A rapid process in plant chloroplasts that interconverts violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin in response to light. Bright light drives zeaxanthin formation, which helps plants dissipate excess excitation energy.
