Knowra Zebroid Zebroid A hybrid offspring of a zebra and another equine, such as a horse, donkey, or pony. Zebroids inherit distinctive combinations of equine traits, often including partial striping.
Zebra : A striped African equid comprising several living species in the genus Equus. One parent is a zebra, whose species and traits shape each hybrid.
Zorse : A hybrid produced by crossing a zebra with a horse. The zorse is the zebra–horse cross most commonly associated with zebroids.
Meiosis : A cell division process that produces reproductive cells with half the usual chromosome number. Meiosis can fail to pair mismatched chromosomes in zebroid reproductive cells.
Equine breeding : The planned reproduction of horses and related equids for selected traits or purposes. Zebroids are produced through deliberate or incidental crosses between equids.
Horse : A domesticated equid, Equus caballus, used for riding, work, and companionship. Horses are among the most common non-zebra parents of zebroids.
Zonkey : A hybrid produced by crossing a zebra with a donkey. This common named cross pairs a zebra with a donkey rather than a horse.
Heterosis : The tendency for hybrid offspring to outperform their parents in particular traits. Hybrid vigor is sometimes proposed to explain traits observed in individual zebroids.
Animal husbandry : The care, breeding, and management of domesticated animals. Keeping zebroids involves husbandry needs inherited from both equine parents.
Donkey : A domesticated equid, Equus asinus, descended from the African wild ass. A zebra crossed with a donkey produces a familiar kind of zebroid.
Zony : A hybrid produced by crossing a zebra with a pony. This name is used for zebra–pony crosses, another form of zebroid.
