Zebulon Pike

Zebulon Pike was an American army officer and explorer whose expeditions mapped parts of the Louisiana Purchase and the American Southwest.

Pike Expedition: Zebulon Pike’s 1806–1807 expedition explored the upper Mississippi and traveled into Spanish-controlled territory. This expedition began as a survey of the upper Mississippi and ended with Pike’s arrest by Spanish authorities.
Louisiana Purchase: The 1803 purchase in which the United States acquired France’s claim to a vast territory west of the Mississippi River. Pike’s first expedition surveyed parts of the newly acquired territory.
Pike's Peak Gold Rush: The Colorado gold rush that began in 1858 and used Pike’s name in its promotional slogan. The rush turned Pike’s name into a lasting symbol of Colorado’s western promise.
