Zechstein

The Zechstein is a late Permian sequence of evaporites and other sedimentary rocks deposited across the northern European basin. Its thick salt deposits formed in restricted seas and later shaped regional geology and resources.

Zechstein Sea: A late Permian sea that covered parts of northern Europe and deposited the Zechstein succession. Its repeated connection to the ocean and subsequent isolation drove cycles of evaporation.
Permian: The geologic period from about 299 to 252 million years ago, preceding the Triassic. The Zechstein accumulated during the Permian’s final epoch.
North Sea oil: Petroleum produced from offshore fields in the North Sea. Zechstein salt structures helped shape traps and migration pathways in parts of the basin.
Zechstein Group: A formal lithostratigraphic group comprising late Permian strata in parts of the North Sea region. It is a mapped stratigraphic unit within the wider Zechstein succession.
Evaporite: A sedimentary rock formed when dissolved minerals precipitate as water evaporates. Evaporite formation explains the Zechstein’s abundant halite, anhydrite, and related minerals.
Lopingian: The final epoch of the Permian Period, spanning approximately 259 to 252 million years ago. Zechstein deposition belongs to this final Permian interval.
Zechstein gas: Natural gas produced from reservoirs associated with Zechstein strata in northern Europe. Zechstein carbonates and adjacent units host notable gas reservoirs.
Zechstein Limestone: A carbonate unit deposited during an early phase of Zechstein marine flooding. Its reefs and associated carbonates form reservoirs in parts of the North Sea.
Halite: The mineral form of sodium chloride, commonly deposited as rock salt. Thick halite beds are among the succession’s most characteristic deposits.
Northwest European Basin: A broad sedimentary basin system underlying parts of northwestern Europe. The Zechstein succession accumulated across this regional basin system.
