Zewditu
Zewditu was Empress of Ethiopia from 1916 to 1930 and the first woman to rule the Ethiopian Empire in her own right.
Haile Selassie: Haile Selassie was emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, after serving as regent and heir apparent under Zewditu. As regent and heir apparent, he accumulated power during her reign and succeeded her.
Ethiopian Empire: The Ethiopian Empire was a sovereign monarchy in the Horn of Africa that lasted from the medieval period until 1974. Zewditu ruled this empire during a period of dynastic transition and state reform.
Regency: A regency is government exercised by a regent on behalf of a monarch who cannot or does not rule directly. Ras Tafari’s regency shared authority with Zewditu and shaped the practical limits of her rule.
Ethiopia under Haile Selassie: Ethiopia under Haile Selassie was the period of imperial rule from his coronation in 1930 until his overthrow in 1974. His accession after Zewditu extended reforms and transformed the monarchy she had headed.
Lij Iyasu: Lij Iyasu was Ethiopia’s designated emperor from 1913 until his deposition in 1916, though he was never crowned. His deposition cleared the way for Zewditu’s accession to the throne.
Ethiopian succession crisis of 1916: The 1916 Ethiopian succession crisis ended Lij Iyasu’s rule and brought Zewditu to the throne. This crisis directly produced the political settlement that made her empress.
Ethiopian nobility: The Ethiopian nobility was a network of hereditary rulers and court officials who held land, military authority, and political influence. Negotiation among nobles constrained and supported the empress’s governing power.
Ethiopian modernization: Ethiopian modernization comprises efforts to reform state institutions, education, infrastructure, and diplomacy. The reform program advanced under Ras Tafari gathered momentum while Zewditu remained empress.
Menelik II: Menelik II was emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to 1913, known for defeating Italy at the Battle of Adwa. Zewditu was his daughter, and her imperial legitimacy rested partly on that dynastic connection.
Battle of Segale: The Battle of Segale was a 1916 conflict in which forces loyal to Zewditu defeated supporters of Lij Iyasu. The victory secured Zewditu’s position after the deposition of her predecessor.
