Zhang Xianzhong

Zhang Xianzhong was a Chinese rebel leader who founded the short-lived Great Xi dynasty in Sichuan during the Ming–Qing transition.

Ming dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644. Its late political and fiscal crises created openings for Zhang’s rebellion.
Great Xi: A short-lived rebel state Zhang Xianzhong established in Sichuan in 1644. It was the political regime Zhang built after taking Chengdu.
Sun Kewang: A commander who served Zhang Xianzhong and later became a major military leader in southern China. He was among Zhang’s leading followers and survived the Great Xi’s collapse.
Battle of Xichong: A 1647 battle in Sichuan in which Qing forces defeated Zhang Xianzhong’s army. Zhang was killed during the defeat that ended his rule.
Chongzhen Emperor: The last Ming emperor, who ruled from 1627 until the dynasty’s fall in 1644. His reign saw rebellions and military defeats that Zhang exploited.
Chengdu: The capital of Sichuan, an important city in western China. Zhang made Chengdu the center of his Great Xi rule.
Li Dingguo: A military commander who served Zhang Xianzhong before fighting for the Southern Ming. His career links Zhang’s rebel army to later resistance against Qing rule.
Chengdu massacre: A reported mass killing associated with Zhang Xianzhong’s conquest and rule in Chengdu. Accounts of atrocities there have shaped his reputation, though details remain disputed.
Ming dynasty famine: A series of severe food shortages in late Ming China, intensified by climate disruption and war. Famine helped drive rural people into the rebellions Zhang led.
Sichuan: A province in southwestern China, centered on the Sichuan Basin. Its basin and mountain approaches shaped the territory Zhang could hold.
