Zia-ul-Haq

Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq (1924–1988) was a Pakistani military ruler and president who governed Pakistan from 1977 until his death. His rule combined military authority, Islamization, and close cooperation with the United States during the Soviet–Afghan War.

Islamization in Pakistan: The incorporation of Islamic principles into Pakistani law, education, and public institutions, especially under Zia-ul-Haq. Zia’s policies institutionalized this state-led program, including Islamic criminal laws and changes to education.
1977 Pakistani coup d'état: The military coup in which Zia-ul-Haq removed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto from power on 5 July 1977. It began Zia’s rule and replaced Pakistan’s elected government with military administration.
Soviet–Afghan War: The 1979–1989 conflict in which Soviet forces backed Afghanistan’s communist government against Afghan resistance groups and their allies. Zia’s Pakistan became a principal base for supporting Afghan resistance against the Soviet occupation.

Indo-Pakistani War of 1965: A war between India and Pakistan fought from August to September 1965 over Kashmir and other fronts. Zia served as a military officer during this conflict, part of his professional army career.
Benazir Bhutto: A Pakistani politician who became prime minister in 1988, the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country in modern times. She led opposition to Zia and returned to electoral politics after his death.
