Ziegler–Natta catalyst

A Ziegler–Natta catalyst is a transition-metal catalyst system that polymerizes olefins into long chains, often with control over molecular weight and stereochemistry.

Cossee–Arlman mechanism: A coordination–insertion mechanism explaining how transition-metal catalysts grow polyolefin chains. It describes olefin coordination and insertion at the metal center during chain growth.
Olefin: An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Olefins are the monomers that Ziegler–Natta systems polymerize.
Karl Ziegler: A German chemist whose organometallic research led to catalysts for polymerizing ethylene under mild conditions. His group discovered the aluminium-based chemistry that preceded the catalyst system.
High-density polyethylene: A relatively linear polyethylene with high density and crystallinity. Ziegler–Natta catalysts produce this material by polymerizing ethylene with limited chain branching.
Polymer industry: The industrial sector that manufactures polymers and converts them into materials and products. Ziegler–Natta catalysis enabled high-volume production of important commodity plastics.
Coordination polymerization: Polymerization in which a monomer coordinates to a metal center before joining a growing chain. Ziegler–Natta catalysis is a major method within this broader polymerization family.
Polyethylene: A polymer made from ethylene, with properties that vary according to branching and molecular structure. Ethylene polymerization is a foundational application of these catalysts.
Giulio Natta: An Italian chemist who used related catalysts to produce stereoregular polymers, including isotactic polypropylene. His work demonstrated that these catalysts could control polymer stereochemistry.
Isotactic polypropylene: Polypropylene whose methyl groups lie in a consistent stereochemical arrangement along the chain. Stereospecific catalyst sites make this strong, crystalline commercial polymer.
Polymer chemistry: The study of polymer synthesis, structure, properties, and reactions. The catalyst connected organometallic chemistry to controlled macromolecular synthesis.
