Zimbabwe African National Union

The Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) was a nationalist organization founded in 1963 to end white-minority rule in Rhodesia. It became the political foundation of ZANU–PF after Zimbabwe’s independence.

National Democratic Party (Rhodesia): A Rhodesian African nationalist party founded in 1960 and banned in 1961 by the white-minority government. ZANU emerged after the NDP’s successor, the Zimbabwe African People’s Union, was banned.
Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army: The military wing of ZANU that fought Rhodesian forces during the liberation war. ZANLA carried out the armed campaign associated with ZANU.
Herbert Chitepo: A Zimbabwean nationalist lawyer who became ZANU’s national chairman and led it from exile. Chitepo directed ZANU’s external leadership before his assassination in 1975.
Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front: The political party that governed Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until losing power in 2017. ZANU became its central component, and the name formalized the alliance with the Patriotic Front.

Mozambique Liberation Front: The organization that led Mozambique’s independence struggle and governed after independence in 1975. Mozambique’s independence gave ZANU and ZANLA a neighboring base for operations.
